SculptX 2023: Celebrating the Diversity of African Sculpture

By Lindelwa Masuku

The Melrose Gallery is excited to announce the 6th edition of their annual sculpture fair, SculptX 2023. The exhibition will showcase a diverse range of sculpture and installation works, both indoors and outdoors, from emerging, mid-career, and established sculptors throughout the gallery and the Melrose Arch urban precinct in Johannesburg.

SculptX 2023, which will run from 6th September to 31st October 2023, provides a platform for African sculptors to exhibit their works to a wider audience. The exhibition promises to be a celebration of contemporary sculpture and installation, with works ranging from the abstract to the representational, from the small to the monumental, and from the traditional to the avant-garde.

Participation in the show presents a great opportunity for artists to showcase their work and gain exposure within the art community. The Melrose Gallery will promote and sell the works through the gallery, associated events, online platforms, newsletters, and other activations that SculptX runs. This exposure and promotion will provide an excellent opportunity for artists to connect with collectors, curators, and other art professionals.

The Melrose Gallery is known for its support of emerging and established artists and is dedicated to showcasing the best of contemporary art from Africa. SculptX 2023 is a continuation of this commitment and is open to sculptors from across the African continent.

As SculptX 2023 approaches, we are reminded of the crucial role that galleries play in supporting emerging artists and providing them with a platform to showcase their work to a broader audience. It is through exhibitions such as SculptX that artists can gain exposure, build their reputations, and make connections with collectors and other art professionals.

Galleries have a significant role to play in fostering artistic talent,

and it is essential that they continue to provide support to emerging artists. By providing opportunities for artists to exhibit their works, galleries help to cultivate new voices in the art world and encourage creative expression.

Applications for SculptX 2023 are now open and will close on 31 May 2023. Artists interested in participating should contact Joy Woolcott at sculptx@themelrosegallery.com for more information.

SculptX 2023 promises to be a remarkable sculpture fair, with a broad range of works from exciting sculptors in the country. This is an opportunity not to be missed, and we cannot wait to see what the sculptors will bring to this year’s edition. Galleries such as The Melrose Gallery play a vital role in promoting the work of emerging artists and providing them with opportunities to gain exposure and build their careers. We hope that other galleries will follow in their footsteps and continue to support emerging artists, ensuring that the art world remains vibrant, diverse, and inclusive.
