TS Galaxy Ladies Football Team midfielder Mpumi Nyandeni was crowned the 2022 South African Football Journalists Association's women's footballer of the year at Southern Sun Hyde Park in Sandton on Tuesday afternoon.

Beating Busisiwe Ndimeni, Amogelang Motau, Lonathemba Mhlongo and Boitumelo Rabale in a well contested nomination, Nyandeni's exceptional performance in her previous team JVW Football Club last season was the difference as the 35 year old affirmed her position as one of the best talents of her generation.

Nyandeni not only walked home with the accolade however, she also won a prize money of R15 000 along with a night for two at a four-star hotel in Sandton, courtesy of Tsogo Sun.

Upon receiving the award Nyandeni expressed her delight for achieving the feat and also thanked the South African Football Journalists Association for the recognition and undying enthusiasm to promote women's football.

"I am truly humbled to be recognised as the women's footballer of the year at the SAFJA Awards, this shows that my work does actually speak for itself and while I continue to play I believe this will also get to inspire more of the young players that wish to have a successful journey in women's football," Nyandeni said.

The midfielder who has UEFA Champions League experience from her time in Russia with WFC Rossiyanka, continued to express her gratitude to SAFJA and how much women's football needs exposure in South Africa.

"I would like to commend SAFJA for the brilliant work that it does, this shows that journalists in this country still have the belief in women's football and may the association continue to give women's football the much needed exposure for it to grow."

With Nyandeni hinting at a possible retirement, the SAFJA women's footballer of the year recipient also spoke about why she decided to join the TS Galaxy Ladies Football Team.

Nyandeni is also just one cap shy of reaching the biggest milestone of her career being 150 caps for Banyana Banyana.

"Well for me going to TS Galaxy was a dream come true because I have always wanted to conclude my football career in Mpumalanga because that's where I started and I think after my contract ends at Galaxy I am done however, I am also optimistic that I will be given that last Banyana Banyana cap to conclude my career with 150 caps for the national team," Nyandeni added.

During the awards ceremony, SAFJA's partners Hollywoodbets also expressed their delight in being part of the SAFJA awards.

Hollywoodbets Senior Soccer Sponsorship Coordinator, Indira Albuquerque said, "We are delighted to be part of this great initiative by SAFJA and also delighted to contribute to rewarding well-performing athletes in football. We pride ourselves in being involved with the development of the women's game and will continue to do so."
