SAFA announces a R2.9 million loss for 2022

Amid the PSL's absence from SAFA's two-day football workshop/indaba, the South African Football Association announced a R2.9 million loss for 2022 during the Ordinary Congress on Sunday the 23rd of April 2023.

The Ordinary Congress was held at Emperors Palace in Kempton Park and SAFA CEO Tebogo Motlanthe alluded that Gronie Hluyo, SAFA's CFO explained that the association has incurred a loss of R2.9 million.

Despite the huge loss of revenue from the association, Motlanthe and the various representatives of SAFA are expecting a financial boost when they announce a new sponsor for Bafana Bafana after South African Breweries’ ended the 20-year sponsorship of Bafana earlier on this year.

"The emphasis even from the national executive committee is to come with new ways of generating income, the CFO has put forward many proposals and the NEC has put together a committee responsible to review the proposals and take an action plan on the matter.

All of us see the economy is not what it used to be and traditional sponsorships are no longer the way to go therefore we will be announcing two key sponsors, one for Bafana Bafana and one for the regional leagues [fourth division] but the mandate is to not only look at traditional sponsorships," Motlanthe said.

Among some of the other things that happened during the congress was SAFA's technical director Walter Steenbok presenting his national developmental plan, and members got a chance to participate in that plan, the mandate of the plan is to discuss the planning of football from the junior ranks up to the Under-23's.

Motlanthe furthermore stated SAFA has resolved to finally appoint permanent junior national team coaches, which have been lacking in recent years.

"We want a head of junior coaches, but we need to get permanent people dealing with the junior teams, we have already advertised for a women’s football manager and should make that appointment soon.

We also want to strengthen our income generation, so the sooner we get the commercial director the better and that has also been advertised so within this month we will finalise those two key appointments," Motlanthe added.

With Motlanthe believing that the workshop was successful, the other highlight was the overwhelming endorsement of all the members to push the mandate of bidding for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup to be hosted in South Africa.
