The South African men's and women's hockey side have created history by qualifying for the 2023 FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup.

With the teams defeating Argentina and New Zealand respectively at the Heartfelt Arena in Pretoria on Thursday night, it is the first time both teams has qualified for the last 8 of the indoor World Cup.

The men's team achieved the feat after defeating Argentina in Pool B 6-5 and had Mustapha Cassiem to thank after he dramatically ensured that he becomes the hero of the match by scoring the winning goal with less than 20 seconds from time.

It was quite evident from the beginning of the match that The Blitzstoks came into the encounter with one goal in mind and that was to secure the win.

Mustapha's brother, Dayaan Cassiem broke the deadlock in the first minute of the match before Mustapha added the second goal moments later.

With South Africa building a comfortable 5-3 lead in the third quarter, Argentina pounced on several mistakes from the Blitzstoks and restored parity with only four minutes left.

In a match that seemed to be ending with a 5-5 draw the home crowd was set into a frenzy when Mustapha scored and secured the victory for the home side.

Meanwhile in a clash of the titans, the South African women's hockey side brushed off New Zealand 6-3 in Pool A at the Heartfelt Arena to finish 3rd in the pool and qualify for the last 8 too.

Both sides will now set their focus on the quarterfinals as they prepare to face off against Netherlands and Belgium respectively.
