Rhulani Mokwena praises Ronwen Williams on huge milestone

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena has reacted to the recent massive milestone achieved by number one goalkeeper Ronwen Williams over the past weekend.

Williams managed to secure another clean sheet as Sundowns defeated Marumo Gallants 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane for their 21st victory of the season.

Sundowns' clean sheet against Marumo Gallants saw Williams surpass Moeneeb Josephs' record of 17 clean sheets during the 2009/10 season at Orlando Pirates.

With Williams joining the Brazilians at the beginning of the season from SuperSport United, the Bafana Bafana captain has now kept 18 clean sheets since taking over the number one goalkeeping spot from Denis Onyango.

Amid Williams being able to achieve the huge milestone, Mokwena reiterated that the accomplishment is courtesy of a team effort.

“We are very proud of Ronwen and the team at large, as I always say, individual records are only a reflection of the contribution of everybody because it is a team performance, it's a team record and I am very proud of the entire team and everybody at the football club,” Mokwena said.

With Sundowns set to play their last league match against Maritzburg United on the 16th of May, Williams has another chance to extend the record to 19 clean sheets in a single season.

Before their encounter with Maritzburg United, Sundowns will travel to Morocco on the 13th of May for a date with Wydad Casablanca in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final at the Stade Mohammed V.

Kick-off in that encounter is 21:00 o'clock South African time.
