Following their progression to next season's CAF Champions League, Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has alluded that Pirates should qualify for the CAF Champions League every season.

The Buccaneers hammered AmaZulu 4-0 on Saturday afternoon in the last 2022/23 DStv Premiership match at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to collect all the maximum points and finish second on the log standings with 54 points.

The victory also saw Pirates join Mamelodi Sundowns in continental football as the two teams will be representing South Africa next season in the CAF Champions League while SuperSport United will play in the Confederations Cup after finishing the league on position three.

Amid their progression to the Champions League, Riveiro expressed his delight at the feat, stating that a club of Pirates' calibre should participate in the Champions League every season.

"Well finishing in the second position gives us an opportunity to be in the Champions League next season, something that a club like Orlando Pirates must achieve every single year and I am happy to be part of this group that has made that to be possible," Riveiro said.

The last time Pirates were in the CAF Champions League was during the 2019/20 season however, they had a disappointing run as they crashed out of the competition in the first preliminary round after losing 2-1 on aggregate to the Green Eagles of Zambia.

The Buccaneers then played in the CAF Confederations Cup during the 2021/22 season where they lost 5-4 on penalties in the final against RS Berkane.

With the CAF Champions League mission now accomplished, Pirates will turn their attention to the Nedbank Cup final against Sekhukhune United on Saturday the 27th of May at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

A victory for Pirates' would mean that Riveiro's charges would have now won two domestic titles in the 2022/23 campaign after winning the MTN 8 last year in November.
