Perfect start for Sundowns in the CAF Champions League

By Neo Poho

Mamelodi Sundowns opened their 2023 campaign of the CAF Champions League with a 1-0 victory against Al-Hilal on Saturday afternoon at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns continued with their fine form that they have been displaying in the DSTV Premiership by dominating proceedings from the first half till the end of match.

Youngster Cassius Mailula pounced on an unconvincing save from Al-Hilal goalkeeper after Neo Maema's shot was too powerful for him to handle, Mailula's goal proved to be the difference in an encounter where Sundowns should have won by a bigger margin of goals considering the attack and number of chances they created.

The victory means that Sundowns have now won 17 consecutive matches in all competitions after recently winning the Nedbank Cup last 32 fixture against Richards Bay four days ago.

The Brazilians who were knocked out in the quarterfinals of the Champions League last year will hope that coach Rhulani Mokwena will be able to lead them to a second Champions League title after they managed to achieve the feat in 2016 under Pitso Mosimane.

Mokwena was part of that Champions League winning team serving as the assistant coach of the team, the well seasoned coach has not lost a match in all competitions since he was appointed as the sole head coach in October 2022.

Masandawana next face Coton Sport from Cameroon in the next Champions League fixture on the 17th of February at the Stade Omnisport Roumdé Adjia in Cameroon.
