Orlando Pirates prepare for a tricky Cape Town Spurs test

By Neo Poho

After winning the 2023 MTN8 a fortnight ago at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates return to action with another cup clash on Friday night as they welcome Cape Town Spurs for the round of 16 fixture in the newly-launched Carling Black Label Knockout Cup.

Heading into the encounter Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has reiterated that his side has prepared well for the upcoming tie and that they will present the best version of themselves against the Urban Warriors.

"It's our fourth competition in the space of two-and-a-half months, so it's with the same intention to go in every competition until the end, step by step little by little, starting on Friday against Cape Town Spurs.

It’s complicated as usual, a difficult one, we have to give our best version one more time and coming from two weeks of good preparation due to the Fifa break, we are going to be in a good space on Friday again," Riveiro said.

With talisman Zakhele Lepasa out due to injury, Riveiro will look to Kermit Erasmus who despite not playing enough this season provides a wealth of experience especially in cup ties.

Pirates and Spurs cross paths for the first time since meeting in the opening round of the Nedbank Cup back in February 2018.

On that occasion, it was the Buccaneers who prevailed, netting two unanswered goals to progress to the next round.

The two sides had met twice in the league prior to that, bagging a win apiece with the home sides in each of the two games prevailing.

In the five seasons preceding the Urban Warriors’ relegation from the top flight, the Soweto Giants had only lost once against the Cape Town outfit while emerging victorious six times in 11 games across competitions.

Kick-off at the Orlando Stadium on Friday night is 19:30.
