Orlando Pirates captain is optimistic the Sea Robbers will win another domestic title

By Neo Poho

After missing out on the MTN 8 triumph last year in November against AmaZulu due to injury, Orlando Pirates captain Innocent Maela believes he can finally raise a trophy for the first time as the captain of the club on Saturday night.

Pirates take on Sekhukhune United in the final of the Nedbank Cup on Saturday evening at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium looking to clinch another domestic title in the 2022/23 PSL season.

While the Bucanneers are chasing that milestone, Maela is also looking forward to finally leading the team to a cup final victory in his maiden season as the captain of the side.

The left footed player who has been struggling with injury lately came on as a substitute in Pirates' 4-0 victory over AmaZulu last week Saturday and was very influential in the build up to Pirates' fourth goal on the day.

Speaking ahead of the match on Saturday, Maela reiterated that the team is ready and raring to go as they would like to finish the league strong.

“What we can promise is the team that will play with dedication, a team that will play to win, a team that is ready to compete and play for one another.

God willing, we will win the match but that will also require us to follow the coach’s game plan, his instructions and how we will approach the match," Maela said.

The 30 year-old will also be looking to make it in the starting XI as he has fully recovered and is fit and fresh for the encounter on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Pirates' midfield maestro Miguel Timm has expressed the hunger the Bucanneers have of winning the Nedbank Cup for the first time in nine years.

"We are obviously going to this game with a lot of hunger and desire to get that feeling that we had in the MTN8 final, I must say it is an addictive one, it has become a virus in the locker room in a good way and we are looking forward to the weekend and we hope we come together and lift the trophy," Timm added.

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday evening is at 18:00 o'clock.
