The newly elected Executive Mayor of Johannesburg, Councillor Thapelo Amad has announced the appointment of some of his Mayoral Committee. This, as the mayor has been in office for less than a week.

Following his election as the new Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg last week, Councillor Thapelo Amad has kicked off his term in office with the appointment of eight members of his Mayoral Committee.

According to the mayor’s office, the new MMCs were appointed after consultation with other parties, adding that this was done with the aim of “solidifying the Government of Local Unity (GLU) partnership in the City".

Among those appointed include:
  • Dada Morero as MMC for Finance
  • Jack Sekwaila as MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services
  • Anthea Natasha Leitch as MMC for Housing

Despite this announcement, the mayor’s office has expressed that the mayor plans to appoint additional members to be a part of his committee in the City Council Meeting.

The mayor has since pleaded with the city's management team to work with the GLU in an integrated manner as well as with professionalism. This, according to him is to increase productivity.

With the newly appointed MMCs set to be sworn in today, one will wait in anticipation to see whether Kenny Kunene will occupy a position in the Mayoral Council as well.

The Joburg Post (JP) spoke to an insider in the Patriotic Alliance, following allegations that Kunene would be sworn in today as well.

Unable to confirm this, JP was informed that the party in the city would be putting his name forward for an MMC position within GLU negotiations.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
