Meet the new acting CEO of Eskom: Calib Cassim

By Tshegofatso Makola

It has been just over a day since the immediate resignation of the former CEO of Eskom, Andre de Ruyter was announced, and the power utility has since announced Calim Cassim as its interim CEO.

Following the scandalous departure of Andre de Ruyter from the position of Eskom CEO, the power utility has been quick to announce the interim group CEO, Calib Cassim.

Cassim, who is not a new face in the embattled power utility, has served as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in 2018. However, his career at Eskom dates back over 20 years.

The acting CEO holds a Masters in Business Leadership (MBL) and is a registered Chartered Accountant.

Eskom has since expressed that his qualifications and expertise within the utility have provided him with “a deep understanding and appreciation of the Eskom business and the electricity industry, especially regarding the challenges facing the financing of operations and future expansion of the industry.”

With Cassim having become CFO after being appointed as acting CFO the year prior, one will wait to see if the same will play out in the position of Group CEO.
