Marumo Gallants welcome Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup last 16

By Neo Poho

Due to continental football commitments, Marumo Gallants and Mamelodi Sundowns will play their Nedbank Cup last 16 encounter a week earlier than the other teams when the two sides meet at the Free State Stadium on Thursday the 2nd of March 2023.

Both Gallants and Sundowns come from very tricky CAF Confederations Cup and CAF Champions League encounters over the past weekend with Gallants losing their group A clash in the Confederations Cup to USM Alger away from home.

Meanwhile Sundowns played out to a 2-2 against African giants Al Ahly in Egypt on Saturday night.

Despite the unfavourable results from the two sides in their respective continental duties, Gallants are occupying the second spot in group A on 6 points after 3 matches played while Masandawana are sitting at the summit of group B with 7 points after 3 matches too.

The sides will now turn their attention to domestic football as they lock horns in the Nedbank Cup last 16 in what many call a repeat of last season's Nedbank Cup final.

Sundown went on to win that encounter 2-1 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium after Thapelo Morena scored very late in extra time.

Almost a year later and the rivalry continues this time for a spot in the quarterfinal of the Nedbank Cup, Gallants head into the clash after defeating Magesi FC 3-1 in the round of 32 at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium on the 7th of February 2023.

While Rhulani Mokwena's charges got the better of Richards Bay FC in the last 32 with a 3-2 victory at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on the 7th of February 2023.

Gallants will be looking for revenge as they will try to shock the Brazilians and get the much needed victory while Mokwena and co. will know that a treble is on the horizon if they can go through to the quarterfinal after having had one hand on the DSTV Premiership title and having not lost any match in the CAF Champions League.

Kick-off at the Free State Stadium is expected to be at 18:00 in the evening.
