Manchester United are the Carabao Cup Champions

Manchester United have ended their six-year trophy drought after winning the 2022/23 Carabao Cup with a 2-0 victory against Newcastle United at the Wembley Stadium on Sunday evening.

A 33rd minute Casemiro header gave United the lead after a superb free kick delivery by Luke Shaw in the penalty box of Newcastle United.

Manchester then upped the tempo after the first goal as 6 minutes later Marcus Rashford was at it again and this time the forward saw his shot being deflected into the net as the goal was deemed to have been an own goal by Newcastle's Sven Botman.

Manchester then consolidated matters to make sure the teams head into halftime with the 2-0 lead, the second half provided some action as Newcastle tried to bounce back however, the ever consistent back four of the Red Devils was stagnant and didn't allow any breakthrough from Newcastle.

Manchester also had their fair chance of good goal scoring opportunities but lack of composure in front of goal and poor decision making in the final third was the reason Erik Ten Hag's charges couldn't add more goals to the 2-0 lead.

The Carabao Cup is Manchester's first piece of silverware since they won the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017, and it could be the first trophy of a potential quadruple, with United still in the FA Cup, Europa League and still having an outside shot of winning the English Premier League.

The victory also means that Ten Hag has won his first silverware in his debut season for Manchester and the 53 year old has mentioned that he is delighted that his side showed the right spirit towards the match.

"We fought and gave everything as a team, it wasn't the best football but it was effective, you have to win the first trophy and that is what we did today, you can take inspiration from this but also more confidence, we are still at the start of the process to restore Man United to where they belong," Ten Hag said.

Meanwhile man of the moment Marcus Rashford also mentioned that it is a mixture of different emotions to win the Carabao Cup.

"It is massive for us to be involved in these games, it is something that we have missed as a club and hopefully this win pushes us to keep going, we want more moments like this," Rashford added.

Manchester will now turn their attention to the 5th round of the FA Cup when they take on West Ham United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
