Manchester Derby on the Horizon

By Neo Poho

Once again the time has come for Manchester to be divided, it's the Red Devils against The Citizens at the Theatre of Dreams for the 189th Manchester Derby.

The sides head into this encounter with Manchester United looking to make a statement while City will look to claim the bragging rights once again, having thumped the Arch-Rivals 6-3 last year in October at the Etihad Stadium.

United have been in excellent form since they returned to competitive action following the World Cup winning all six of their matches in all competitions and breaking through to the UEFA Champions League spot on the log standings.

Much has been said about the current form United find themselves in but if there's someone who deserves all the credit it has to be the man at the helm, Erik Ten Hag.

Ten Hag has transformed the team from the deep muddy clay and planted it among the best in the league with discipline at the centre of the transformation.

The Dutchman has posed a new code of discipline that has enhanced the players he inherited, fostering a sense of unity that had been lost.

The discipline has also been evident in the field of play because United are clearly a better side than the one that was humiliated last year in October by the Arch-Rivals.

Key Players to look out for from both sides:

Having recently won the Manchester United Player of the Month Award for December, forward Marcus Rashford is in an extremely hot form scoring 7 goals in the past 6 matches United has played so far.

Speaking about Rashford, Ten Hag mentioned that he thinks the 25 year old is capable of scoring 20 goals in the Premier League this season while his teammates also share the same sentiments.

On the opposition side it is no doubt that the current English Premier League top goalscorer Erling Haaland is the man to look out for, the Norwegian forward has been a force in the attack of Manchester City firing from all cylinders.

Haaland has scored 21 goals with just 17 matches played and 21 more to go in this campaign, the last time he played against Manchester United he scored a Hat-Trick to mark his arrival in the Manchester Derby.

The 22 year old will also be hoping that his teammate and the club's top assist player Kevin De Bruyne will mesmerize United's midfielders and provide the perfect assists.

Although history in football doesn't say much but Manchester City are still favorites heading into this encounter because of the quality of players Pep Guardiola has however with United on an unbeaten streak in 11 competitive matches it will certainly go down to the wire.

Kick-Off at Old Trafford is at 14:30.
