Mamelodi Sundowns remain the highest ranked team in Africa

Despite their disappointing exit from the CAF Champions League in the semi-finals last weekend, reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns remain the highest-ranked club in Africa in the Opta's global team rankings.

The Opta power rankings include nearly 13 500 domestic football teams and provide team ratings across the entire global footballing ecosystem as it allows to compare teams in different countries or continents to inform decisions on a comparable scale.

With the Opta power rankings, ranking teams on a scale between zero and 100, where zero is the worst ranked team in the world and 100 is the best team in the world, a team's rankings is determined by its results in domestic and international tournaments but also the strength of the respective competitions.

Thus, Mamelodi Sundowns after an impressive lately in the league has climbed into the first spot on the African continent and 164th globally dethroning Wydad Casablanca from the first spot in Africa.

The Brazilians won the just concluded DStv Premiership league by a mammoth 70 points after 30 games winning 21, drawing 7 and losing two in the process.

2022/23 CAF Champions League finalists, Al Ahly have moved to the second spot in the continent and 173rd globally while Wydad Casablanca have fallen to the third spot in Africa and 189 globally.

Meanwhile, Soweto giants Orlando Pirates are back in the top 10 in Africa after finishing as runners-up in the 2022/23 DStv Premiership season and also still with a big chance of winning another domestic title in the form of the Nedbank Cup.

Pirates are occupying the 7nth spot in the top 10 teams in Africa according to Opta power rankings that is updated daily, the Sea Robbers' inclusion in the top 10 teams in Africa also sees them occupy the 351st spot globally.
