Mamelodi Sundowns were officially crowned the 2022/23 DStv Premiership champions on Tuesday night after playing out to a 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United in their last league match of the season at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium.

Sundowns who have been on an incredible form for the larger part of the season broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Surprise Ralani after a beautiful assist from Neo Maema.

Ralani's goal was followed by numerous attempts from the home side to extend the lead however, Maritzburg United's defense was too stagnant for Sundowns to break.

The two sides went to halftime with Sundowns still leading 1-0 and immediately when the teams returned from the break, Sundowns continued with their waves of attack however, against the run of play Ali Meza restored parity for Fadlu Davids' side in the 71st minute.

The teams then went at each other in the final 15 minutes of the match but lack of composure infront of goal let them down as the match ended in a 1-1 stalemate.

The draw means Sundowns conclude the league on 70 points after 30 matches having won 21 matches, losing 2 and drawing seven in the process.

Sundowns will also get to retain the DStv Premiership trophy along with a whopping R15 million after clinching the league for the 6th consecutive time.

The Brazilians will now turn their attention to the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final clash against Wydad Casablanca on Saturday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
