Mamelodi Sundowns advance to the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League

Mamelodi Sundowns kept their CAF Champions League aspirations alive after a convincing 6-2 victory on aggregate against Algeria's CR Belouizdad at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Heading into the second leg of the CAF Champions League quarter-finals leading 4-1, Sundowns won the return fixture 2-1 courtesy of goals by Themba Zwane and Thapelo Morena.

CR Belouizdad's consolation goal came from Sofiane Bouchar early in the first half of the encounter to give the visitors a glimmer of hope despite Sundowns starting the encounter on the front foot.

Immediately after CR Belouizdad broke the deadlock Sundowns had a strong appeal for a penalty rejected by VAR after the half-hour mark, but their persistence in attack paid off in the 45th minute as Zwane exchanged passes with Morena before shooting into the bottom corner, via a deflection off a defender to send the teams to halftime deadlocked at 1-1.

Sundowns began the second half the same way they did with the first as Khuliso Mudau sent in a beautiful cross in Belouizdad' penalty area which was headed home at the far post by an unmarked Morena to put the home side in the lead.

The victory means the Brazilians will now meet with old rivals Wydad Casablanca in the semi-finals next month after the reigning champions overturned a 1-0 deficit against Simba SC on Friday night, claiming a 1-0 win of their own before triumphing 4-3 on penalties.
