Khanyisa Mayo breaks his silence on the failed Kaizer Chiefs transfer

The 2022/23 DStv Premiership joint top goal scorer of the season Khanyisa Mayo has revealed what led to his failed Kaizer Chiefs transfer move.

Mayo was one of the players that was linked to a move to Naturena for the upcoming 2023/24 DStv Premiership season as his outstanding form in the just ended DStv Premiership campaign impressed Amakhosi.

However, the 24-year-old has seen Cape Town City extend his contract with three more years, that terminating any possible move for Mayo to Chiefs anytime soon.

Speaking about the failed move, Mayo said growing up it has always been his dream to play for a big team like Kaizer Chiefs as it is with almost every other aspiring soccer player out there.

"There was interest from Chiefs in January but Cape Town City was not willing to sell me and that is how the move failed and there's nothing I can do about it.

Hence my contract has now been extended until 2028 and I am happy about it because it means my focus and commitment is now fully with Cape Town City," Mayo said.

The left-footed attacker joined City at the start of the 2021/22 campaign from Richards Bay FC while they were still participating in the Motsepe Foundation Championship and ever since then he has not looked back.

Mayo in his over 60 appearances for the Citizens in all competitions has scored 18 goals and provided four assists in the two seasons he has been with Eric Tinkler's charges.

While Cape Town City finished 4th on the log in the just ended DStv Premiership season, Mayo is keen on improving his game to help City challenge for the league next season and also improve his overall performance in the pitch.

"I am extremely happy here and I like the vision that we have now, we want to get better in order to challenge the big clubs and potentially win the league too.

I equally want to improve next season and be more composed in front of goal so that I can score more goals to help my team win," Mayo added.
