Katlego Mashego believes Sundowns have taken the foot off the pedal

Former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego has revealed why Sundowns has been struggling with maintaining their good run of form after winning the DSTV Premiership title.

Sundowns won the league earlier on this month after another impressive season that saw the Brazilians clinch their sixth consecutive league title with 8 more matches to go in the league.

However, since then, the Brazilians have found it rather difficult to continue with their winning streak as back-to-back 0-0 draws against Cape Town City and Swallows FC followed by a 1-1 draw against Golden Arrows were just signs of the worst to follow as they were dumped out of the Nedbank Cup by Stellenbosch FC last weekend.

With a lot of concerns around the sudden inconsistency from the league champions, Mashego believes the players have taken the foot off the pedal.

"The foot is certainly off the pedal and their recent performances can tell that the players are probably tired physically and mentally too.

They have already won the league so they have nothing to play for, I won't say it's a problem because these things happen in football," Mashego said.

Mashego who also played for Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows and SuperSport United just to mention a few also believes the rotation of the squad from Rhulani Mokwena has contributed to the poor performance of Sundowns in the last four matches.

"After winning the league, they were sort of rotating the squad and giving other players a chance to also get a run, I think that disrupted the whole momentum as well.

If changes are made, they don't have to be drastic because that will disrupt the whole team and the combinations you have developed will have to be dissolved to accommodate a set of other players," Mashego added.

'Mahoota' as he was affectionately called by many during his playing days made 36 appearances for Sundowns while scoring 9 goals in the process.

With the chance of winning a treble well and truly out of the equation, Sundowns will hope to return back to their winning ways with a victory against CR Belouizdad in the first leg of the quarter-finals of the 2022/23 CAF Champions League.

The two sides meet at the Stade Nelson Mandela in Algeria on Saturday the 22nd of April 2023.
