Jose Riveiro explains why Dzvukamanja struggled in the beginning of the season

Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has broke the silence on why in-form Orlando Pirates striker Terrence Dzvukamanja struggled to penetrate into the starting XI of the squad during the beginning of the season.

Having missed the first 13 matches of the new season, Dzvukamanja struggled to an extent that he couldn't even make it through to the match-day squad.

Amid the frustration and disappointment of not getting enough game time in the black and white colours of Orlando Pirates, the Zimbabwean international only made his first appearance of the season in October 2022 and Riveiro has stated the reason behind Dzvukamanja's then absence in the squad.

“It was difficult at the beginning of the season for Terrence in terms of minutes and availability to be selected because he was not consistent enough.

In a team like this, that has a lot of competition especially in his position it’s difficult to get the chance to play, so the stiff competition also contributed to his lack of game time," Riveiro said.

Heading into the new year, Dzvukamanja was more determined to fight for his place in the Buccaneers team and that proved evident in his January appearance against Golden Arrows.

The 29 year old had an incredible performance in that match helping the Buccaneers claim a 3-1 victory at the Orlando Stadium while also opening his account for the season with a 90th minute goal.

Since then, he has never looked back as he has scored seven goals and provided one assist in 12 league matches for Orlando Pirates and Riveiro has also praised the 29 year-old for his impressive comeback.

"He has now improved and shown his capabilities because he is now accustomed to the continuity of completing weeks to train and also being available for selection.

He is a very smart player with capacity to score goals like he’s showing in the recent games and we like to see Terrence scoring goals," Riveiro added.

Dzvukamanja will hope to add more goals to his tally especially during the Buccaneers' last game of the season against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Heading into the encounter level on points with third place SuperSport United, Pirates will know that nothing but a victory will be enough for them to secure the runners up spot and progress to the CAF Champions League next season.

Kick-off at the Moses Mabhida Stadium is 15:00 o'clock.
