"If it means we must enact a law to enforce parity, we shall do so" - Minister Zizi Kodwa

Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Zizi Kodwa has not ruled out the possibility of legislation to enforce equal payment for national sports codes.

This comes after Kodwa has been engaging with sporting federations and the corporate sector to address and deal with the issue of gender parity.

Responding to oral questions in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) on Tuesday where he was asked on matters impacting South African sport, the minister reiterated that the government would go as far as creating legislation to ensure gender parity in sport.

"When it comes to the issue of parity, it is important to understand in the context of policy of the governing party and government, that if it means we must enact a law to enforce parity, we shall do so.

It is equally important to note that government also had to continue supporting women in sport beyond just remuneration and salary benefits," Kodwa said.

Meanwhile the minister also alluded that South Africa's commitment to anti-doping was unquestionable.

This comes after South Africa was announced to have been facing possible sanctions by the World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) for failing to comply with the world anti-doping code.

The agency has given South Africa until Friday to comply or run the risk of the national teams playing at international level without the country's flag on display.

However, the sports ministry and the South African Institute for Drug-free Sport (Saids) are challenging the declaration through the Court of Arbitration in Sport (CAS).

Kodwa said that the appeal would buy South Africa some time while working on amending the legislation around doping laws.

"Of course, there are other events that are coming, there's 2024, there's 2027 bidding, there are two world cups at the moment, and that creates a bit of anxiety and hysteria but our purpose now is not because we want to kick the can down the road, we want to find permanent solutions," Kodwa added.
