"I want to win trophies with Chiefs" - Samkelo Zwane

By Neo Poho

In his maiden season as a professional footballer in the black and gold colours of Kaizer Chiefs, youngster Samkelo Zwane wants his tenure at Naturena to have accolades.

Speaking ahead of the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals encounter with Royal AM on Sunday night at the Chatsworth Stadium, Zwane's main focus is to help the team advance to the next round.

The 21 year old graduate from Chiefs' DDC team is gradually establishing himself as a prominent central midfielder at Naturena after being likened to one of the best in the African continent, Tinashe Nengomasha.

Being the son of one of the most famous left winger in South African football, Eugene Zwane has inspired the 21 year old to also want to win trophies at Kaizer Chiefs.

"The history of the club winning trophies is a big motivator for me to aim at helping the team clinch trophies every season because that is the culture we should live by.

"Another massive motivation comes from playing for a team like Kaizer Chiefs that has a rich history when it comes to attaining silverware so I am ready to put in the work and fulfill my dreams of winning trophies with Amakhosi." Zwane said.

With the lanky midfielder's future seeming to be very bright under the guidance of head coach Arthur Zwane, the under-23 international has also expressed his desire to be remembered as Chiefs' legend.

"Working hard as an individual to help your team do well and achieve it's desired goals is one thing that will make you as an individual player to stand above the rest.

"So with that said, I want to help the team achieve its desired goals and also enable myself to achieve the legendary Status at Amakhosi while leaving a legacy too." Zwane added.

Zwane who has recently walked home with the man of the match accolade during Kaizer Chiefs' DSTV Premiership clash against Stellenbosch FC had another outstanding performance in Chiefs' disappointing 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants this past weekend.

The right footed midfielder will be aiming for another starting XI selection on Sunday against a very tough Royal AM side.

The chance exists for Zwane and his Chiefs teammates to write themselves into the history books as the Soweto giants look to go all the way and clinch a record-extending 14th Nedbank Cup.

Amakhosi's last quarter-final encounter in this competition was back in the 2018/19 season, when they managed to record a routine 2-0 win over Cape Town City.

Meanwhile captain Keagan Dolly believes Chiefs will do all they can to reach the last four of the tournament.

"This is the opportunity for us to play for something because we need the silverware, it is a different game to a league game, we have to win no matter how we play and what is important for us is to get to the semi-finals," Dolly explained.

Enroute to the quarterfinals, Amakhosi overcame Maritzburg United and lower division Casric Stars, defeating them 2-0 and 2-1 respectively.

Kick-off at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday night is 18:00.
