Following their third DStv Premiership glory, sixth consecutive crown and 13 overall league title in the history of Mamelodi Sundowns, head coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed that he feels privileged, honoured and lucky to have led such a team to another championship triumph.

Mokwena’s charges made history by becoming the first team in South Africa to win the league title with seven matches remaining in the campaign.

Moreover, Sundowns went unbeaten in 24 league matches since Mokwena took charge as the sole head coach from Manqoba Mngqithi in October 2022.

During his post match interview on Tuesday night after the 1-1 draw against Maritzburg United at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, Mokwena congratulated the team, the staff, the supporters, management and everyone involved with Mamelodi Sundowns for an incredible season.

Mokwena furthermore revealed that he believes that when such great accomplishments are achieved there is certainly a divine intervention that is also at work during the process.

"I am privileged and I understand the magnitude that comes with the privilege, I am extremely honoured because I have the responsibility to lead such an incredible football club and I am extremely lucky as well.

I have honestly seen the grace of God because when one fails a lot of times and then things start to come together you then realise it is not by your own strength nor intelligence but there is indeed a divine intervention at work too," Mokwena said.

The Sundowns mentor who has lately also been likened to Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola for his tactics and understanding of the game, didn't hold back in showering his players with all the praises after a very great season for the club.

"I’m proud of what the players have done this season, over the 10 months because this is the biggest one, it's the championship and it requires consistency.

So, to win it in the manner that we have been able to, is really special and all credit goes to the players of this magnificent football club, these players certainly deserve more credit, noise and attention than they are getting for this achievement," Mokwena added.

While the celebrations and festivities continue in and around Tshwane, Sundowns will turn their attention to the second leg of the CAF Champions League semi-final tie against Wydad Casablanca on Saturday afternoon.

The two sides head into the encounter at the back of a 0-0 draw in the first leg last week Saturday at the Stade Mohammed V in Morocco.

Kick-off at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday is 15:00 o'clock.
