"I am anticipating a mouthwatering clash" - Tebogo Moloi

By Neo Poho

Ahead of the much anticipated Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates this coming weekend, Orlando Pirates legend Tebogo Moloi has revealed that he is anticipating an exciting Soweto Derby.

Pirates head into the clash against Chiefs at the back of 2-1 victory against Maritzburg United at the Orlando Stadium last week Friday while Kaizer Chiefs lost 3-2 to Golden Arrows at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Man of the match during Pirates' encounter against Maritzburg United, Monnapule Saleng has been influential in Pirates' last two encounters in all competitions scoring in both matches and also providing an assist in the Maritzburg encounter.

His inclusion and presence for Pirates against Chiefs on Saturday will be a force to be reckoned with and Moloi believes that alongside Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo, Kermit Erasmus and Thembinkosi Lorch, Saleng might just lead Pirates to victory again.

"Pirates are currently on a good run of form and I think the likes of Saleng, Lorch, Ndlondlo and Erasmus will be a big problem for Kaizer Chiefs because Chiefs have not been doing well at the back lately," Moloi said.

Moloi believes that for the Soweto Derby on Saturday to live up to its expectations both teams should continue with the style of football they have been playing in the past games.

"To be honest both Chiefs and Pirates have been playing some good attacking football it is just unfortunate that the results have been inconsistent for Chiefs but they are playing good football, I believe if the coaches can keep the same tactics they have been instructing their teams to play with then we have an exciting derby on our hands,"

With Orlando Pirates heading into the clash without head coach Jose Riviero, a lot has been said about how big of an impact the absence of Riviero will have on the team on Saturday but Moloi thinks otherwise.

"I don't think the absence of Jose Riviero will contribute much on the day because he will be part of the build up and preparations ahead of the big day, so on Saturday the players must just go out there on the pitch and execute the plan, the players must equally understand that whether the coach is on the touchline or not they have a Soweto Derby to play and win," said Moloi.

Amakhosi won the last derby last year on the 29th of October when Yusuf Maart scored a long range goal from inside his own box much to the frustration of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Siyabonga Mpontshane after he left his line at the goal posts.

The 36 year old has then seen his coach prefer second choice goalkeeper Sipho Chaine to be between the sticks lately for the Pirates side and Moloi believes that it is such fine margins that determine the outcome of the derby.

"The Soweto Derby is also about who wants it more, that is why it is important for every player to always be alert especially when it comes to the Soweto Derby, this is a game where there is no room for mistakes because any mistake can and will haunt you for the longest time," said Moloi

The 54 year old also reminisced at how his Soweto Derby days were like in the past, reflecting on how important it was to represent Orlando Pirates wholeheartedly and with a positive attitude towards facing Kaizer Chiefs.

"We were just township boys who wanted to play football and represent Orlando Pirates, during derby days we used to get collected via taxi from our respective townships and that created a huge amount of pressure because everyone in your hood would see when you get on that Pirates taxi in the morning and your fellow teammates as we make our way to the stadium," Moloi alluded.

With the Soweto Derby being a big occasion for any player especially youngsters of the respective teams, Moloi mentioned that he still remembers his best Soweto Derby as if it happened yesterday.

"My best Soweto Derby was in 1987 in the Mainstay Cup semifinals when I scored a long range goal against William Shongwe, I was just a young boy from Mafikeng that no one expected to score against Kaizer Chiefs and against all odds I rewrote the script, I remember vividly I was only 19 years old and that was my first Soweto Derby goal," Moloi said.

That match went on to be a 1-1 draw courtesy of a Fani Madida equalizer in five minutes from time.

With the Soweto Derby being a fixture that is filled with tension and drama, Moloi fancies Orlando Pirates to win against Kaizer Chiefs on Saturday despite Pirates losing the past four editions of the rivalry.
