"His style of play contributes positively" - Zwane

Amid the on-going wrath Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Peterson is currently facing from the Kaizer Chiefs supporters, coach Arthur Zwane has came to the rescue of the lanky goalkeeper.

After another disastrous decision to come off the line in Chiefs' 1-1 draw against Marumo Gallants last weekend at the FNB Stadium, Peterson saw him get criticised again by the Chiefs faithful calling for the return of Itumeleng Khune back into the starting XI.

In his last four matches, Peterson has failed to keep a clean sheet conceding five goals in all competitions, although that is a concern to many Chiefs supporters, Zwane is adamant Peterson is still on the right track.

"Football is played based on the demands of that particular game and if Brandon sees the opportunity to get closer to Chiefs' attacking moments, it's the modern game, he'll do that because it's part of the game.

"Today's keepers play as sweepers, more especially when you play against a team like Stellenbosch that uses pace, they always look for spaces behind the defence, so if the keeper sits in goals, you are giving them enough time and room," Zwane said.

Lately Peterson has seen himself as the preferred choice when Zwane has to choose who will be between the post for Amakhosi and Zwane has believes that is all because of the tactical approach from Peterson.

"Peterson's style of play has got more to do with cutting off balls that the opposition gets to pump in the spaces, if the opposition get to the ball first because they have quick players, they can easily punish you however, if the keeper manages his lines and cuts those balls that are played behind defenders, that makes their lives a little bit difficult,'' Zwane added.

Meanwhile, Amakhosi youngster Mduduzi Shabalala is confident Kaizer Chiefs will end their 8 years trophy drought by winning the 2023 Nedbank Cup.

Speaking ahead of Amakhosi's Nedbank Cup quarterfinal clash against Royal AM over the weekend, Shabalala said, "I am feeling good and very excited about playing in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinal, we have been preparing very well as a team and we understand the importance of claiming the victory in the encounter."

Despite his youth, Shabalala’s maturity extends beyond his awareness on the football pitch and he acknowledges the frustration among the fans while simultaneously recognising their positive effect on the team.

"We know that the supporters are not happy with how things have been so far, it's been a long time we have tasted some trophy success and acknowledge that we are the ones who can change the team's fortunes around, so we will try our best to do that," Shabalala added.

Kick-off at the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday is 18:00.
