Fortune Makaringe disappointed by actions of Pirates supporters

Orlando Pirates midfielder Fortune Makaringe has insinuated the club doesn't have genuine supporters who love the club unconditionally and are completely behind the team.

This is after Orlando Pirates forward Terrence Dzvukamanja received an unpleasant reception from the Pirates supporters during his struggling days in the first half of the previous season.

“I remember there was a game we played at the Orlando Stadium and while we were playing, Kermit Erasmus got injured and Dzvukamanja stood up to warm up, and the fans started booing him.

That hurt me as I was sitting in the player’s lounge because I asked myself what kind of people do we have here? how can you boo one of your own?, that was really an unpleasant sight to behold," Makaringe said.

While Dzvukamanja was heavily booed and vilified by his own fans at the Buccaneers most noticeably between December 2022 and January 2023, the 29-year-old silenced his naysayers when he was afforded the opportunity to prove his worth in the second half of the season.

The Zimbabwean born turned his season around to become one of coach Jose Riveiro’s trusted soldiers as he transformed into a match-winner scoring crucial goals including the late winner during the 2-1 victory in the Nedbank Cup final against Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on the 27th of May 2023.

Although Dzvukamanja gradually became a fan's favourite due to his form in the second half of the season, Makaringe is disappointed at how the Pirates fans all of sudden started to praise him.

"What hurts me the most was that after Dzvuka scored, the same people who were booing him, are the same people who celebrated his goal, I was sitting next to Tebogo Tlolane and I remember telling him that if I was Dzvuka and I scored, I don’t know how I would have reacted because I would have been super emotional.

This is just a clear indication that we don't have supporters but rather we have fans," Makaringe added.

Meanwhile, Dzvukamanja ended the season on high note scoring eight goals and providing two assists in 19 matches in all competitions.
