Du Preez and Dolly inspire Amakhosi to victory

Kaizer Chiefs defeated Stellenbosch FC 2-1 at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night to keep their CAF Champions League aspirations alive.

In another thrilling encounter between the two sides who were playing for the third time against each other this season, Amakhosi broke the deadlock as early as the 11th minute through an Ashley Du Preez penalty to give the home side the lead in the opening exchanges.

Stellenbosch were then reduced to 10 men after goalkeeper Sage Stephens committed a professional foul when he handled the ball outside his box.

Amakhosi then quickly pounced on the numerical advantage they had, as captain Keagan Dolly doubled the lead for Chiefs in the 25th minute when his shot from just outside the box was deflected past Lee Langeveldt.

Amakhosi then consolidated matters until halftime however, Stellenbosch came back from the break rejuvenated as they quickly pulled a goal back in the 47th minute through Ibraheem Jabaar.

Despite being a man down, Stellenbosch came back stronger in the second half but they could not find the second goal that could have earned them a vital away point.

Without Yusuf Maart at the heart of Amakhosi's midfield, Arthur Zwane gave Samkelo Zwane a chance to be in the starting XI and the U/23 international had a stellar performance that earned him the man of the match accolade.

Meanwhile at the King Zwelithini Stadium earlier on Saturday afternoon, Orlando Pirates had Terrence Dzvukamanja and Monnapule Saleng to thank as the duo scored in either half to hand Orlando Pirates the much needed 2-0 victory against Richards Bay FC.

Dzvukamanja leaped very high to break the deadlock with a well-taken header in the 32nd minute as the Buccaneers went to halftime in the lead.

With tons of missed opportunities to seal the victory in the second half, Pirates saw their lack of composure up front prevent them from sealing the victory convincingly.

Just as the match was about to end with the scoreline reading 1-0, Saleng ensured the visitors’ victory when he doubled Pirates’ advantage in the 92nd minute after pouncing on a number of mistakes in the Richards Bay defence to convert the winning goal.

The victory means the Buccaneers have now leapfrogged SuperSport United to go second on the log after Matsatsantsa a Pitori played out to a 1-1 draw against Chippa United on Saturday afternoon.
