Daniel Akpeyi reveals why Itumeleng Khune needs to stay at Kaizer Chiefs

Former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi has revealed why Amakhosi's current goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune deserves a contract extension at the club.

Khune's contract is expected to expire at the end of June this year and so far there hasn't been any talks between Khune and the club about the extension of the contract.

While the North West born struggled with form during the just ended DStv Premiership season due to injury, Akpeyi believes the former Bafana Bafana international still has more to offer in the gold and black colours of Kaizer Chiefs.

“Khune has done well for the club, he has won trophies for the club in his long tenure there, so he still has a wealth of experience to share in the team.

Younger goalkeepers need to be nurtured by someone who has experience in order to grow and that's why Khune needs to be there for some time to help these younger ones come up," Akpeyi said.

In his 19 years at Kaizer Chiefs, Khune has been able to win three PSL championship titles, three Nedbank Cup titles, four Telkom knockout titles and three MTN 8 titles.

The 35-year-old has also claimed big individual awards like the PSL footballer of the season accolade, PSL players' player of the season and SA Sports Awards Sportsman of the year accolade.

"For instance Bruce Bvuma has been exceptional and I think he is currently a great goalkeeper under Khune because he has learned a lot from the veteran goalkeeper," Akpeyi added.

Meanwhile, alongside Khune, Khama Billiat, Phathutshedzo Nange and Sifiso Hlanti's contracts are also expected to expire by the end of June 2023.
