City hammer Madrid to book a spot in the final

Manchester City booked their place in the UEFA Champions League final with a ruthless dismantling of Real Madrid in the second leg of their semi-final showdown at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night.

The Citizens won 4-0 on the night and 5-1 on aggregate after playing out to a 1-1 draw in the first leg last week Tuesday at the Santiago Bernabeu in Spain.

City who last reached the final of the competition in 2021, edged ever so closer to reaching another one when Bernardo Silva netted a brace in the first 40 minutes of the encounter.

After dominating proceedings from the first whistle, City were all over Madrid as Silva broke the deadlock in the 23rd minute of the game.

The Portuguese international was at it again in the 37th minute as Pep Guardiola's side went to halftime leading 2-0.

Immediately after the resumption, Carlo Ancelotti's team tried to rally themselves back into the encounter but Eder Militao's own goal and Julian Alvarez's stoppage-time finish only reflected the gulf in class.

Militao's own goal came at the expense of Kevin De Bruyne's free-kick in the 76th minute while Alvarez's clinical goal in the 90th minute was the cherry on top for the Citizens who were rampant from the beginning to the end of the match.

Upon losing the match, Ancelotti alluded that City deserved to win as they played better than them in all avenues in the pitch.

"I think tonight Manchester City deserved to win because they played better than us, last season was different but tonight I repeat, they were better than us as last season we were better than them," Ancelotti said.

Meanwhile, Guardiola was ecstatic with how his team conducted themselves en route to booking a spot in the final.

"This was certainly the highest performance from us, considering the opponent being Real Madrid in the semi-final of the Champions League, we really played well," Guardiola said.

Guardiola's blue and white army will now head to Istanbul in Turkey on the 10th of June for a final showdown with Inter Milan.

Before that though, City will face Chelsea, Brighton and Hove Albion and Brentford in the English Premier League while Manchester United also awaits them at Wembley Stadium on the 3rd of June in the FA Cup final.
