Cilliers Brink warns Lesufi to ‘back off’ ahead of the election of Tshwane’s mayor

DA Councillor and prospective Mayoral candidate, Cllr. Cilliers Brink has come out against the Premier of Gauteng and ANC Chairperson in the Province, Panyaza Lesufi, for what he describes as involving himself too much in the politics of Tshwane.

Cllr. Cilliers Brink has criticised Panyaza Lesufi once again ahead of what is expected to be the election of a new Executive Mayor of the City.

According to Brink, Lesufi has attempted to get members of the DA-led coalition to double cross them once more, adding that “he must distinguish his role as Premier of the Province and Chairperson of the ANC”.

Following the last week’s failed attempt at  electing a new mayor, the numbers seem to be on the DA’s side as ActionSA has a new set of Councillors to replace the three that were dismissed in the party.

If today’s proceedings collapse, this could lower the chances of the much awaited Adjustment Budget being passed, which could see the City being placed under administration.

Brink has since weighed in on the matter, speaking on how the previous situation where the City was placed under administration was harmful for residents.

He added that it was a “disaster for seven months” and the City “ran on a deficit”.

According to Brink, National Treasury has given them until the end of the month to pass the Adjustment Budget whilst Provincial Treasury has given them until Friday, 24 March 2023.

Brink expressed that the Provincial deadline is unrealistic and they will be following the National deadline, adding that if opposed, they will take Gauteng Treasury to Court.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow.
