Christian Atsu found dead following the earthquake in Turkey

Former Porto, Chelsea and Newcastle star Christian Atsu has been found dead following the horrific earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria last week.

Atsu had been missing since the 6th of February 2023 when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake erupted and ever since then the search was on in a bid to locate Atsu's whereabouts.

12 days later, one of Atsu's representatives Murat Uzunmehmet has confirmed the sad news that Atsu's remains were discovered under the rubble.

"Atsu's lifeless body was found under the rubble, currently more items are still being taken out, his phone was also found," Uzunmehmet said.

Meanwhile Atsu's agent Nana Sechere also confirmed the devastating news that the 31 year old's body was recovered dead.

"My sincerest sympathies are extended to the ones closest to him, I am extremely grateful for all the prayers and backing I have received, this is an appreciated chance to express my sincere appreciation," said Sechere.

Atsu who joined Turkish outfit Hatayspor in September 2022 after a season with Saudi Arabian team Al-Raed, was described as 'lovely individual' by the Turkish side who couldn't describe the amount of pain Atsu's death has caused in words.

English Premier League side Everton tweeted after hearing about the passing of Atsu,"We are deeply saddened by today's news that Christan Atsu has been found dead following the earthquake in Turkey earlier this month, our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues at Hatayspor and everyone affected by this tragic event that has claimed so many lives," the tweet read.

While Atsu's first Premier League side Chelsea FC also sent a message of support to Atsu's family stating that everyone at Chelsea Football Club is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of their former player, Christian Atsu. Their thoughts go out to his family and friends. 

Atsu who also played for Newcastle United in the English Premier League in 2016 won 65 caps for his national team Ghana and also helped them reach the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations final where they lost to Ivory Coast 9-8 on penalties, Atsu was later named player of the tournament.

Our hearts go out to Atsu' family, friends, and loved ones. His passing is a huge loss to the football fraternity at large.
