Cassius Mailula reflects on his breakthrough season

2022/23 DStv Premiership young player of the season Cassius Mailula has revealed some of the lessons he managed to learn in top flight football during his first season as a professional player for Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mailula made a name for himself when he scored a brace during Sundowns' 5-0 victory against Maritzburg United on the 25th of October 2022 in a DStv Premiership encounter.

The Ga-Molepo-born then took the league by storm when Sundowns' talisman Peter Shalulile was sidelined for a while due to injury, going all the way to score 15 goals in all competitions during his 31 appearances for the Tshwane based side.

Despite Sundowns getting knocked out of the CAF Champions League semi-finals this season, Mailula has specifically highlighted the lessons through the eyes of playing continental football.

"The demands are very high when you get to play in Africa, something that I actually learned is that at a higher level, one has to be strong mentally and physically because the guys that are playing in the CAF Champions League are always aggressive.

Another element that I had to quickly learn was I need to do my homework in analysing the opponents, I have to know my weaknesses and strengths so that I am aware of what I am going to come across," Mailula said.

The 21-year-old's brilliant performances saw him also earn his maiden Bafana Bafana call-up when South Africa played against Liberia in the African Cup of Nations qualifiers earlier on this year.

Having also earned a call-up for Bafana Bafana's preliminary squad ahead of the encounter against Morroco on the 17th of June 2023, Mailula furthermore alluded that he also learned how to utilise his abilities in a football match.
