As the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup preparations continue, Banyana Banyana's local based players have assembled for camp in Johannesburg as part of strengthening the team and giving head coach Desiree Ellis an opportunity to work on other tactical approaches ahead of the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.

Banyana played their last World Cup preparation friendly last month against Serbia at the Sportski Centar Fudbalskog saveza Srbije and lost 3-2 however,
a lot of positives could be taken out from Banyana in that encounter.

With Banyana Banyana's opening fixture at the World Cup being on the 23rd of July against Sweden followed by Argentina on the 28th and lastly entertaining Italy on the 2nd of August, Ellis believes her charges will be ready by the 28th to start their group G matches and compete well to progress to the knockout phase.

The last time Banyana were at a camp, Ellis and her charges worked on getting their defensive structures in tact and the 60 year old mentor has reiterated that they will use the current camp to focus on other areas the team needs to improve on.

"The last camp was very successful because we even had an extra week added to it and obviously this one will give us an opportunity to work on our set-pieces because this is sometimes a bit of a challenge for us.

A week might not seem a lot but it is a lot in terms of what we can achieve, considering how we grew in the last camp, a week before the FIFA date," Ellis said.

Ellis furthermore alluded that the camp is a huge opportunity for the players to impress as the final team selection is about to be announced in the later future.

"It is a big opportunity for players that are in camp because obviously they have a foot in, but the door is never closed to anyone and it can only be closed once the final squad has been announced.

It has been proven over the last couple of years when players came in just before the WAFCON squad was selected, and made it to the final team, so everybody needs to put in their best performances and best effort because that is what is we are looking for," Ellis added.

Meanwhile, Banyana Banyana's head sponsor, Sasol through their Group Brand and Sponsorship Senior Manager Nozipho Mbatha expressed their delight about the on-going camp and encouraged every player to put their best foot forward in a bid to have a productive time at the camp.

"We would like to wish all the players who have been chosen to be a part of the Banyana Banyana selection camp the best of luck, we believe that every player is excited to bring their A-Game as this may open a world of opportunities, and they could potentially be selected to represent South Africa at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup," Mbatha said.
