Banyana Banyana crowned champions in Turkey

Banyana Banyana received their trophy and medals after they were officially crowned as group A winners of the 2023 Turkish Women’s Cup in Antaly, Turkey.

Banyana Banyana achieved the feat after they defeated Uzbekistan 3-0 on Saturday the 18th of February 2023 and drawing 1-1 with the tournament's runners up Slovenia on Tuesday the 21st of February 2023, although Banyana Banyana and Slovenia finished the group on 4 points each Banyana won the group and tournament by virtue of a superior goal difference.

An official of Evima Football who are the organisers of the Turkish Women's Cup, Evgeni Marinov has mentioned that it was very important to have a team like Banyana Banyana participating in the tournament because that gives the Turkish Women's Cup exposure and more recognition.

"It was extremely important to have Banyana Banyana joining the Turkish Women's Cup because the very same Banyana Banyana will be participating in the FIFA Women's World Cup so it was a good experience to host Banyana amid the devastating times in Turkey," Marinov said.

Marinov furthermore explained that after the Banyana Banyana game against Slovenia on Tuesday the 21st of February 2023, the organising company concluded that the winner of the tournament would be the South African ladies football team who have a better goal difference despite finishing on 4 points just like Slovenia in group A.

Banyana's Hildah Magaia, who scored the equaliser against Slovenia on Tuesday, was named as the midfielder of the tournament for her brilliant performance throughout the tournament for the South African side.

Meanwhile Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis believes their time in Turkey for the Turkish Women’s Cup was worthwhile, saying it helped them test their tactical and physical abilities.

"The two games were valuable and we tried to give many players an opportunity to also play and participate in the tournament, overall the tournament and our time here in Turkey was worthwhile and we have gained a lot of experience," Ellis said.

Banyana will now make their way back to South Africa in a couple of days time as a heroes welcome from the South African fans will be imminent when Banyana arrive.
