Andile Dlamini wins the SA Sport Star award at the SA Sport Awards

Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Football Team and Banyana Banyana goalkeeper Andile Dlamini capped off a brilliant 2022 season after winning the SA Sport Star of the year award at the 16th annual SA Sport Awards on Saturday night at Sun City.

After winning the Sport Personality of the year award at the Gauteng Sport Awards last month and the Sportswoman of the year accolade at the 3rd annual Gauteng Women in Sport Awards, Dlamini is without a doubt the athlete of the year in 2022.

Dlamini was nominated alongside swimming sensation Mathew Sates and golf star Ashleigh Buhai, who also had a great 2022.

Upon receiving the award 'Sticks' as she is affectionately called by her teammates and fans alike was very emotional and full of gratitude to her family, friends and teammates alike.

"Firstly I would like to thank the Almighty God and my parents for raising me, I would like to thank everyone that supported Andile Dlamini and her craft this is also for you. Being on stage tonight and collecting such a big award has always been a dream and I am humbled that tonight my dream has manifested into reality," Dlamini said.

The 30 year-old who expressed her gratuity towards her Banyana Banyana and Sundowns ladies team teammates also walked away with R500 000 as part of the package along with the accolade.

"Special thank you has to go to Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns for inspiring women to start playing football and showing the country what women empowerment is all about, this is just a testament that dreams do come true," Dlamini added.

Dlamini also received the Minster's Excellence Award for her incredible athleticism in 2022 and for also playing a crucial role in Banyana Banyana winning their first Women’s African Cup of Nations in Morocco last year.

Meanwhile Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana player Themba Zwane won the People's Choice Award as voted for by the public, Zwane was nominated against the likes of Refiloe Jane, Kagiso Rabada, Ayabonga Khaka and Tatjana Schoenmaker.

The 33 year who is currently with Bafana Bafana for international duties couldn't be at the awards ceremony to collect his award however, Dlamini collected the award on his behalf.

Gauteng Sport Awards Sportswoman of the year recipient Lara Van Niekerk walked home with the Sportswoman of the year accolade while also receiving the Minister's Excellence Award.

"First of all I just want to thank my parents and my coach because without him I would have not been here, this award also goes out to all the wonderful and dedicated team members that I work with," Van Niekerk said.

Rocco Meiring won the coach of the year award while teenage swimmer Pieter Coetzee won the Sportsman of the year award and the Springboks Sevens won the Team of the year accolade.

In other notable categories Hloni Mtimkulu won the journalist of the year award while Samkelo Gambushe was named the photographer of the year to also conclude a brilliant 2022 after winning the KwaZulu-Natal sport media person of the year and the sport journalist of the year in 2022.

Indigenous games team of the year: Limpopo Ncuva — Male team

Volunteer of the year: Zizo Popu — Eastern Cape

Coach of the year: Rocco Meiring — Swimming

People's Choice Award: Themba Zwane
