Andile Dlamini crowned Sportswoman of the year

Banyana Banyana and Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Football team goalkeeper Andile Dlamini won the Sportswoman of the year accolade at the 3rd annual Gauteng Women in Sports Awards at the Kyalami Country Club on Saturday evening.

Dlamini who comes from international duty with Banyana Banyana in the recent Turkish Cup was overjoyed as she walked onto the stage to collect the prestigious prize.

The women's African Cup of Nations goalkeeper of the tournament expressed her joy after receiving the award stating the award is dedicated to every individual that has played a vital role in her life and journey in football.

"This award goes out to my family who have been with me throughout this difficult journey, my supportive partner, my teammates both at Sundowns and Banyana if it wasn't for them I don't think I would have matured to the kind of player I am today and lastly coach Desiree and coach Jerry for believing in me at all times, I am grateful," said an emotional Dlamini.

Dlamini who couldn't hold back her tears during her speech continued to reflect on how much she is proud of herself, "I am extremely grateful to walk on stage and collect my own award, it is such an honour to be celebrated as a woman in sport, I promised myself not to cry but I can't help it because this award is testimony enough that God is indeed alive, I have been through a lot in my life and to be standing here tonight collecting such a big accolade is a testimony,"

Dlamini who contracted Covid-19 in 2021 reflected on how tough it was during that period however, the medical team at Mamelodi Sundowns were extremely supportive in making sure she gets all the necessary medical attention she needed.

"I would like to thank the Doctors at Mamelodi Sundowns who were with me throughout that covid scare when I was positive, I nearly lost my life and I remember I also had some heart complications but I am glad I overcame all of that and I am healthy now, stronger than ever and raring to go," Dlamini said.

The 2022 Gauteng Sport Awards Personality of the year recipient also spoke about her aspirations to play in 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup, "I am obviously working hard to make it in the final squad ahead of the World Cup in July and August because there's so much talent out there, I can't be comfortable and think I have already made the cut, I need to fight to make it in the squad," added Dlamini.

Banyana Banyana have been drawn in Group G alongside Spain, Italy, and Argentina for the showpiece that commences on the 20th of July till the 20th of August 2023.

Meanwhile Dlamini's coach at Mamelodi Sundowns Jerry Tshabalala won the coach of the year award while Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies Football team capped off a brilliant year by winning the team of the year accolade.
