Amakhosi's quest for a trophy continues

It's been 8 years since Kaizer Chiefs last lifted a trophy and with the MTN 8 and the DSTV Premiership already out of their reach this season, Amakhosi are aiming on getting their hands on the Nedbank Cup this season and also end the trophy drought.

That continues with a trip to the Chatsworth Stadium on Sunday night against Royal AM in the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup.

Ironically Chiefs head into the quarterfinals clash with John Maduka's side being the leading team to win the most Nedbank Cup titles with a record of 13 titles behind their name.

The last time Amakhosi won the coveted prize was way back in the 2012/13 season defeating SuperSport United at the Moses Mabhida Stadium under the guidance of Stuart Baxter who was also the last coach to win the league with the Glamour Boys during the 2014/15 season.

A decade later, Chiefs has Arthur Zwane who has been entrusted with the role of re-writing the script and bring back the glory days to Naturena.

In his first spell as the head coach Zwane has managed to take the side to the MTN 8 semifinals however, couldn't prevail past a very stubborn AmaZulu side, the side is also still contention for the runners up position in the league with 41 points trailing second place Orlando Pirates by two points.

Now Zwane has the opportunity to lead the team into the Nedbank Cup semifinals and potentially go all way to the final and claim the title.

En route to the last 8, Amakhosi had to wait for extra-time to get over Maritzburg United in the last 32 at the Harry Gwala Stadium courtesy of goals by Christian Saile and Ashley Du Preez.

The Glamour Boys had Du Preez to thank again in the last 16 after he scored the winning goal in the second half against Casric Stars for a 2-1 victory in favour of Zwane's men.

Amakhosi face a Royal AM side that they have managed to defeat for the first time in the reverse fixture of the DSTV Premiership in January at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Amakhosi, 'The Cup Kings' as they were affectionately known back in the days will again look to the services of Du Preez who has lately found his rhythm in front of goal to help the side get over the line on Sunday.

Chiefs will also be extra motivated to do well in the Nedbank Cup because the winner of the title will automatically get qualification to the CAF Confederations Cup next season, something Chiefs also want to play continental football should they fail to finish the league as runners up.
