Amajimbos take on Senegal in a Do or Die encounter

The South African under-17 team is just one win away from qualifying for the 2023 U/17 FIFA World Cup when they take on Senegal in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final clash on Wednesday night.

After losing 3-2 to Nigeria on Saturday night, Amajimbos had to depend on Burkina Faso to defeat Cameroon in order to advance to the knockout phase of the competition.

Although they have qualified for the last 8, it doesn't get any easier for Duncan Crowie's charges as they take on Senegal at the Nelson Mandela Stadium.

Senegal progressed to the quarter-finals of the competition after dominating group A with a 100% record winning all their three matches against Algeria, Congo and Somalia.

Despite the Lions of Teranga's impressive form in the competition so far, Crowie believes his charges are ready and willing to take the fight to Senegal in a bid to advance to the semi-finals of the competition.

"We are obviously happy to be playing in the quarter-finals, the boys are sincerely over the moon and the mood is a great one in the camp.

We are looking forward to the encounter against Senegal, I think if the boys are not motivated now then nothing will ever motivate them because if they win this game, they qualify for the World Cup so that alone should be enough motivation for the boys," Crowie said.

With a spot in the semi-finals up for grabs, the top four teams at the tournament will also qualify for the 2023 FIFA U/17 World Cup, to be staged in a yet to be announced country after FIFA withdrew Peru's hosting rights due to failure of meeting the requirements of hosting the global showpiece later this year.

Kick-off at the Nelson Mandela Stadium on Wednesday evening is 18:00 South African time.
