Amajimbos on the verge of qualifying for the AFCON knockout phase

Following their hard-fought 3-2 victory against Zambia in the second group B match on Wednesday evening, Amajimbos are looking to book a spot in the 2023 U/17 Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals.

The South African side came out guns blazing against the U/17 Cosafa Cup champions after losing their opening group match 2-0 to Morocco last week Sunday.

With Vicky Mkhwana netting two goals inside the opening half hour of the encounter, Duncan Crowie's men sealed the victory through Michael Dokunmu in the 76th minute after Zambia had restored parity in the second half.

Despite the massive win at the Stade Mohamed-Hamlaoui Stadium, Crowie says they are not getting ahead of themselves as they are aware of the complexities of what could transpire on Saturday night in the final group stage match against Nigeria.

"We can’t look to the knockout stages as yet because this is a tough group where anything can happen and I don’t want to be controversial because Morocco is already through to the next round.

They will most probably play a second-string team against Zambia, which will be in the favour of Zambia which could put them on three points,” Crowie said.

Both South Africa and Nigeria are currently locked on three points each heading into the final encounter of the group and a victory for either one of the two teams will see them advance to the next round alongside Morocco.

“Nigeria will have to get a point or win, meaning they will play a strong team against us so that is most probably the tactics used but we will go out and if we can at least get a draw, it will be enough to put us through.” Crowie added.

Meanwhile Amajimbos player, Gomolemo Kekana who has started both the group stages games at the 2023 U/17 AFCON for the South African side, believes the team is ready to face Nigeria.

“I could say that we have prepared well for the game and we are in the right frame of mind and we thank the coaches for how they have prepared us and showed us the mistakes we made and we just need to keep working hard and play our football,” Kekana said.

Kick-off at the Stade Mohamed-Hamlaoui Stadium on Saturday night is 21:00 South African time.
