Third Time Lucky for Opposition as Phalatse is Ousted from Office

By Tshegofatso Makola

A battle well fought by Dr. Mpho Phalatse, saw her removed once again as the mayor of Johannesburg.

In what was a lengthly procedure, filled with caucus breaks and singing all around, the results proved the predictions of disgruntled opposition parties right.

Phalatse was removed in an motion of no-confidence tabled by opposition parties, some of which formed a part of the City’s multi-party government.

With 140 votes for the motion and 129 against (including ActionSA), the verdict was final and the mayor was ousted.

The Joburg Post caught up with Phalatse where she expressed how it’s been an honour serving the City.

Phalatse further expressed that there would be no need to appeal the verdict in court this time around.

The Council was expected to table a motion of no confidence against the Speaker, Colleen Makhubele, but this was withdrawn in the eleventh hour by ActionSA.

The Council was expected to vote for the new mayor today, but this was moved to tomorrow due to some council members claiming that they were not informed to bring their identity documents.

With all that took place today, the question of who the new mayor will be, will be answered on 27 January 2023.
