Buccaneers Forwards coach likened to Benni McCarthy

Newly appointed Orlando Pirates forwards coach Scott Chickelday has hit the ground running and already caused a tremendous impact.

Chickelday joined Pirates earlier on this year after the Soweto giants were really struggling in front of goal last year scoring 15 goals in 14 matches played however ever since his appointment, the Buccaneer's have scored 7 goals in just two matches.

The UEFA B Licensed coach Chickelday, is no stranger to the game of football as he has played a vital role in the development of Tottenham Hotspur academy along with the QPR academy too. Chickelday has also served as the women's team coach of Billericay Town FC.

Aston Villa forward Ollie Watkins and Liverpool's Harvey Elliot are just two of the many clients Chickelday has at his disposal.

"A lot of the other players who I work with do not want me to mention their names because they want it to be confidential,"  Chickelday said.

Orlando Pirates forward Vincent Pule has expressed his excitement over the appointment of Chickelday, likening his work to what Benni McCarthy does in the camp of Manchester United.

Benni McCarthy’s influence over Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford has been highlighted in recent months with the latter scoring nine goals in nine consecutive appearances.

The Englishman has been working on how to get the best from a Pirates attack that involves a number of left-footed players. The likes of Vincent Pule, Monnapule Saleng, Kabelo Dlamini and Deon Hotto are all left-footed.

If there's one philosophy that Chickelday believes in, it is repetition. Chickelday describes the skill of how a player can be a great forward that scores goals by using the repetition philosophy.

"Repetition of shooting is one of best ways to improve, the idea is to tailor it to the individual because it depends on what they want to achieve. It could be working on reducing the number of touches in and around the box"

"Some players need too many touches so we work on getting into productive areas from limited touches, We work on different techniques of strikes from different angles," Chickelday added.

The ripple effect of the forwards coach at Pirates has also inspired Arch-Rivals Kaizer Chiefs to also look into getting a forwards coach.

This comes after Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane hinted that Chiefs is looking to strengthen the forwards department by getting a striker coach.

Zwane is also concerned about the number of clear cut opportunities Amakhosi should have converted in their recent matches.
