Chiefs woes continue as Sundowns make history

By Neo Poho

Could that have been the final nail in the coffin? " ... Well that is the question on everybody's lips about the future of Arthur Zwane at Naturena.

If anything is to go by Zwane is certainly on the brink of losing his job at Chiefs after extending their miserable form with a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns at the FNB Stadium on Saturday night.

Neo Maema's 20th minute strike in the first half was enough to inflict Zwane's third defeat in a row this year, leaving Chiefs with 7 losses in the campaign so far.

Zwane though remains adamant that things will get better and has also publicly emphasized that he is not worried about his job at Chiefs.

Well be that as it may, Amakhosi fans have started to call for the departure of Zwane with majority of them being disappointed at the performance of the side so far in the league.

Scoring only 18 goals and conceding 21 in the league so far is proving that the Glamour boys have problems on both ends of the park with Zwane struggling to find the perfect combinations and balance of the side.

At the end of this season Kaizer Chiefs would have went 8 full seasons without a PSL title and that is unacceptable for a team of Chiefs' magnitude let alone the great history and culture that has been built across the years.

Speaking of history and winning culture that has been built, Sundowns' win over Amakhosi was hugely significant as the Brazilians have set a new PSL record of winning 12 consecutive matches breaking their own record of 11 consecutive wins in 2006/07.

The victory also cements Sundowns title hopes as they undoubtedly already have one hand on the champions trophy with a 17-point lead over the nearest chasers Richards Bay FC.

Sundowns' victory also saw them complete a league double over Amakhosi for the first time since the two sides have played each other in the PSL era.

With the relevant question being, "How many points will Sundowns have at the end of the season?" The Brazilians next face TS Galaxy on Tuesday at the Mbombela Stadium before hosting Sekhukhune United at Loftus Versfeld on the 29th of January 2023.
