An ordinary death or an act of police brutality? That's the question that's been on everyone's mind amid the death of Tanzanian national, Omari Hamisi. His death sparked outrage in the form of violent protest action in the City, with accusing the police of killing Hamisi.

Yesterday proved to be a day of utter chaos in the Johannesburg CBD, with civilians taking to the street in protest and barricading Commissioner Street. This following the death of 28-year-old man, Omari Hamisi.

According to police, a search and seizure operation was conducted in Hamisi's home after receiving a tip-off of someone selling drugs in the area. They further added, Hamisi collapsed during the operation and was declared dead on the scene.

Despite this, neighbours of the deceased have accused the police officers who conducted the search and seizure operation of killing Omari.

Meanwhile, Premier Panyaza Lesufi said that the pathologist has not found any evidence of physical harm to the victim. According to Lesufi, drugs and an undisclosed amount of money was found in Hamisi's appartment.

With police vehicle's having been vandalised due to the protest action, at least 13 people were arrested during the protest.

The Gauteng Premier's Office has since expressed that Joburg CBD will remain under its supervision.
