SA ready for Indoor Hockey World Cup

The 6th edition of the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup sets to be a thrilling one as 12 men’s and 12 women’s national indoor hockey teams will go head-to-head from the 5th of February till the 11th of February 2023 in Pretoria.

Host nation South Africa have decided to go with a mixture of both youngsters and experience in the men's team as they seek to make a statement in the tournament.

Drawn in pool B alongside Iran, Czech Republic, Australia, United States and Argentina, the side will be led by Jethro Eustice.

Eustice who has represented South Africa in the 2014 Commonwealth Games at Glasgow and the 2018 Men's Hockey World Cup in India brings alot of experience and influence in the team, something the young players can take and learn from him.

Another player looking to impress and help the team is Justin Domleo, Domleo is South Africa’s most experienced indoor hockey player with 42 International caps to his name.

Alongside Eustice and Ryan Julius, Domleo's presence will be of utmost importance in helping the SA Team do well and potentially win the World Cup. 

Coach Justin Rosenberg has also selected the Cassiem brothers, Mustapha and Dayaan Cassiem are some of the young players to look out for in this highly competitive World Cup along with Anton van Loggerenberg and Bongumusa Mngoma.

Rosenberg is also keen and hopeful that the team will do well moreover taking into consideration that it is the first time the tournament will be held outside Europe since its inception, "We are privileged to host the FIH Indoor Hockey World Cup in South Africa."  

"We are a country with a wonderful history and relationship with the game of indoor hockey, our squad selection has the ambition to add another memorable chapter to those history books. We can't wait to entertain the crowds at the heartfelt Arena" Rosenberg added.

The opening match on day 1 of the FIH Men’s Indoor World Cup will see Australia face off against host nation South Africa in Pool B and Netherlands will play Namibia in the 4th men’s game of the day to begin the tournament in Pool A. 

Defending champions Austria then play against New Zealand in the 5th men’s match of the opening day, in their quest to retain their title.

Meanwhile in the FIH Women’s Indoor World Cup hosts South Africa will face off against Austria in Pool A, and USA who have qualified for their second straight appearance at the Indoor World Cup will then take on Australia.

Netherlands, who have five consecutive top-2 finishes and are the defending silver medalists, will begin their campaign in the 3rd game of the day, taking on debutants New Zealand.

South Africa women's team are in Pool A alongside Netherlands, Austria, Australia, United States, and New Zealand.
