Miss Universe : A New Era of Representation and Diversity

By Lindelwa Masuku

The Miss Universe competition, one of the most well-known beauty pageants in the world, has been held annually since 1952. Contestants from all over the globe compete for the coveted title, with past winners hailing from countries such as Venezuela, the Philippines, and South Africa.

However, African countries have not had as much success in the competition, with only a handful of contestants from the continent making it to the finals in recent years. With the exception of the monumental win of South African born, Miss Zozibini Tunzi, crowned Miss Universe in 2019.

On Saturday night, R'Bonney Gabriel was crowned the winner of Miss Universe 2022 at the 71st edition of the pageant. This year's competition was held in New Orleans, and was the first under the new leadership of Thai billionaire Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, a transgender woman.

The pageant's new direction focuses on highlighting important issues such as gender equality and women's rights, with the organization stating that the pageant is "made by women, for women."

Gabriel, who has Filipino roots, replaces Miss India Harnaaz Sandhu as the winner of the pageant. As Miss Universe 2022, Gabriel will spend the next year representing the organisation and will move to Thailand, where the pageant's headquarters are now located. Miss Venezuela Amanda Dudamel and Miss Dominican Republic Andreina Martinez were first and second runner-up, respectively.

While the Miss Universe pageant may be a source of national pride for some, it is not without its criticisms. Some argue that beauty pageants objectify women and place too much emphasis on physical appearance. Additionally, the pageant has been criticised for its lack of diversity and representation, with many of the past winners coming from a small pool of countries.

Furthermore, the pageant has also been criticised for its lack of representation of African countries. Despite the continent's diversity and rich cultural heritage, African countries have not had much success in the competition in recent years.

This lack of representation is unfortunate, as it denies audiences the opportunity to see the diverse beauty and talents that Africa has to offer.

In conclusion, the Miss Universe pageant is a significant event that brings together contestants from all over the world to compete for the title of Miss Universe.

While the pageant may have its criticisms, it is also an opportunity for young women to showcase their talents and represent their countries on a global stage.

However, it is important for the pageant to continue to work towards greater representation and diversity in the future, particularly for African countries.
