A Joburg Conversation with Phemelo Motene

By Joburg Post

The places that mean a lot to me... It's place I am told my ancestors are from that I am drawn to, I yearn to connect, and so those places mean more to me than just destinations.

The best book I have read in the past year...Siphiwo Mahala's biography of Can Themba: Can Themba, the making and breaking of the Intellectual Tsotsi. It's about the Drum-generation renowned journalist and thinker. It's a look at the complex life of an intellectual, whose life and dreams were so disrupted by the apartheid government, that he sadly eventually dies in a foreign land a broken man...definitely worth picking up.

My style Icon...I don't follow trends, I love a classic look, and clean, understated elegance. Channel speaks to me.

In my fridge, u will always find... In my fridge, you will always find double cream plain yoghurt.

The work that changed everything for me... The work that changed everything for me was a job at a community radio station. I used to go to the station after school, I was still a grade 11 student and wasn't even getting paid, but I absolutely loved it. It was the doorway to where I am today.

The best gift I have given recently... You know it was just flowers, but I have a feeling they meant a lot to that person. Unexpected, but sent at the time when the receiver really needed to be cheered up.

And the best gift I have received... It's two gifts: my late brother and my father decided to get me the most stunning outfit and a bag to match for a function I was attending a few years ago. To this day, that outfit and the bag remain my most treasured outfit.

I've recently discovered... I am getting old when I started having a knee problem....my goodness my grandparents complained about knees, how did I get here (LOL)

The thing I couldn't do without... It would have to be coffee. Coffee has saved many days and nights for me. I only started drinking coffee when I was already much older. I had always loved the smell, but it was never really my thing, until I started working in the news room, and my goodness it saved many days.

The last item of clothing I have added to my wardrobe... Winter is kicking in, so it is a beautiful winter coat.

I have a collection of... Precious stones, I marvel at natures beauty, nature's complexity, and that nature still holds so many of it's secrets to itself. Anthropology intrigues me, science fascinates me.

The Grooming staple I am never without... It the tweezer. My hair grows very quickly and often my eyebrows grow so quickly I would need to do a quick plug in between meeting, so that I don't scare those around me.

My favourite in my house... I live in a house with pressed ceilings, the craftmanship is really beautiful. Silently lying in my bed, looking up at the ceiling at the end of a really long day, is one of my favourate things to do. It calms the mind.

My favourite building... I love old buildings, especially Cathedrals. Whenever I visit a new city, the one thing I try and do, is to visit the Cathedral if there is one.

In another life, I would have been a man. I wonder how differently my life would have turned out. The freedom, challenges, the expectations...I really wonder20. Inspiration can happen....Often inspiration for me happens when I least expect it. Seeking knowledge inspires me. There is always something knew to learn, and that is what interests me.
