#PlayOfThe Week

By Fentselite

This week in world sport was a case of the expected and the experienced. Some tried and won, while some just didn’t try enough as we look at the mixed fortunes of South African sporting teams.

The qualifiers for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar have been in full steam from all corners of the world and several countries have qualified for the spectacle already, including Germany with their new coach and former Bayern Munich manager Hansie Flick, who has continued his winning streak from the German champions into the national team registering a record 7 wins in his first 7 matches.

Paul Pogba-less France saw off Kazakhstan with 8 goals to no response, including Kylian Mbappe’s first-ever hattrick! The PSG forward connected well with Real Madrid’s Karim Benzema and stirred the ongoing conversation about his January 2022 prospects as speculations about joining his compatriot in Spain continues.

South Africa failed to qualify for the next round in their journey to Qatar 2022 after a loss to the black stars of Ghana. Bafana Bafana were leading their group ahead of the match but a singular goal by Ghana cut the lead and the three points meant they advance to the next round and Bafana Bafana returned home.

The conversation of the number of African countries qualifying for the FIFA World Cup continues to be a hot potato and hopefully, the rumours that FIFA will add more countries would be welcomed if that is realized.

Ghana’s goal came from a soft penalty that wouldn’t have been granted if we had VAR but South Africa, yet again had to accept their fate that they’re not going to the World Cup.

Those may have been bad news from continental football as far as South Africa is concerned, but there was good news elsewhere! The Mamelodi Sundowns Football Club ladies have been doing phenomenal work in the inaugural Total Energies CAF Women’s Champions League and they have now qualified for the semifinals and on course to become the inaugural winners of the competition and continue to make history.

A Mapimpi-inspired Springbok performance saw the South Africa rugby team walk over Scotland in Edinburgh with a 30-15 convincing “training session” that saw a great performance from Finn Russel’s boot!

For this week’s #PlayOfTheWeek we drive to Brazil!

The f1 delivered great excitement on the track as Lewis Hamilton cut Max Verstappen’s lead to 14 points with a sensational drive this weekend. Mercedes Benz was punished by the authorities for tempering with their car and Lewis Hamilton had to be relegated to 10th position on the starting grid. The champion did some masterclass driving to win the Brazilian Grand Prix ahead of Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen and Valtteri Bottas completing the podium.

Lewis Hamilton also deservedly got the Driver of the Day nod and made sure the race for the championship this season remains heated.
