#PlayOfTheWeek

By @fentselite_

The football world has been like a blockbuster in the last week and the lead actors and the villains have created plot twists worthy of an academy award. Each day has had a moment worthy to be our play of the week and up until a few hours ago, the script kept changing.

Earlier in the week Kaizer Chiefs displayed football that their fans had even forgotten the Naturena team could play when they took on their hoodoo team Baroka, with striker Khama Billiat equaling his tally from last season in only the second match of the new campaign with his partner in crime Keagan Dolly giving a man on the match performance that saw Baroka coach flat on his bum on the ground with shock! “Bolo will kill you a real death” one famous Baroka coach used to say.

South Africa landed two gold medals at the Paralympics in Tokyo this weekend through 400m runner Anrune Weyers and 19-year-old long-jump sensation Ntando Mahlangu who also set a new world record. Ntando Mahlangu was born with fibular hemimelia and as a result, he had both legs amputated at the knee in 2012. These are South Africa’s first two medals at the games.

But the real drama happened the other side of the seas and as usual the football battle was between Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. The former has finally made his much-anticipated debut for PSG in his jersey number 30 replacing Neymar in the second half against Reims. Seeing Leo Messi in a football jersey other than of Barcelona is something the football world will still take a while to get used to.

Now to the play of the week that started with Cristiano Ronaldo making headlines for his move from Juventus to Manchester City. The entire England was torn by this, with many labeling him a traitor especially after the man himself had always said he would never play for Red Devils rivals.

Enter Fergie Time and suddenly Cr7 was blue-ticking Pep Guardiola and news broke those talks have been halted and Man City were no longer in the running for the Portuguese striker. Thanks to a call from Sir Alex Ferguson, the man responsible for Ronaldo joining Man Utd in the first place and suddenly Man United was “close to re-signing Ronaldo”.  In a matter of hours, Cristiano Ronaldo bid farewell to Juventus and his manager Massimiliano Allegri and left Turin. By this time, Manchester United was said to be sending a bid to the Italian giants for the service of CR7.

As he landed back home, he found that the world had held its breath trying to figure out if The Last Dance is happening! And true to form, the bid came from Man Utd and agent Jorge Mendez and Juventus were happy with the details. Manchester United broke the news the world was held in suspense over with a mere three-word tweet…  “Welcome home @cristiano!”

Cristiano Ronaldo, who was brought to Old Trafford by Sir Alex Ferguson from Sporting in 2003 and left for Real Madrid in 2009 but not before 84 goals and a Champions League medal (the last time Red Devils won Champions League was with him) and became a world star and a club legend, was now returning to the crime scene over a decade later, now a 36-year-old multi-ballon d'Or and Champions league winner!

Finally, Manchester United has found a worthy replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo! As we get into the international break, the world of football will be anticipating the return of Cr7 who probably will wear Edison Cavani’s jersey number 7.

Extra time: Congratulations to Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer for the record 205 clean sheets and his teammate Robert Lewandowski who hit 300 Bundesliga goals when they beat Hertha 5-nil with the Polish pouncer scoring a hattrick and a consecutive 15 goals!
