Former President Jacob Zuma has handed himself over to the police.  Zuma has been placed in the custody of the South African Police Service as prescribed by the judgment that was made by the Constitutional High Court. Following the former president's failure to hand himself over to police custody, Police Minister Bheki Cele was given until Wednesday midnight to enforce the constitutional order and to arrest the former president

A large crowd led by Zuma's son Edward Zuma was seen chanting and singing outside Zuma's Nkandla homestead, however, following mixed emotions and confusions about whether or not Zuma was going to comply,  Zuma’s motorcade was seen speeding out of his homestead at about 11.20 pm on Wednesday.

Minutes before midnight, Zuma’s foundation announced: “Dear South Africans and the World. Please be advised that President Zuma has decided to comply with the incarceration order. He is on his way to hand himself into a Correctional Services Facility in KZN. A full statement will be issued in due course.”
Police Minister Bheki Cele was given until Midnight on Wednesday to enforce a Constitutional Court order to arrest the former president.

The motorcade reportedly arrived at the   Estcourt Correctional Centre at about 1.20 am. At 2 am, the Department of Correctional Services (DCS)  also issued a statement confirming Zuma's arrest.

The statement read:

“Mr Zuma will be taken through all the admission processes as per DCS regulations. Other relevant prescripts pertaining to admitting and orientating newly incarcerated persons will also be followed and executed.

“Details about the appropriate classification, prerogatives and incarceration conditions can only be determined at the completion of the assessment process to be undertaken by relevant authorities within the employ of DCS.

“Keeping inmates in safe and secure custody remains cardinal to Correctional Services and we remain committed to this cause.”
