By Phumzile Mavimbela

Zambia's founding president Kenneth Kaunda will be buried on 7 July, three weeks after he died aged 97, the presidency announced on Monday.  Kaunda died in a hospital in the capital, Lusaka. He was the last of the giants of 20th century African nationalism.

Some of Kaunda notable achievements include him being the first president of independent Zambia. In 1973 following tribal and inter-party violence, all political parties except UNIP were banned through an amendment of the constitution after the signing of the Choma Declaration. At the same time, Kaunda oversaw the acquisition of majority stakes in key foreign-owned companies.

Kaunda will be buried at the country's presidential burial site situated opposite the cabinet office in Lusaka, following a state memorial to be held at the city's 60,000-seat National Heroes Stadium on 2 July.
